How can I make the embroidery effect on my logo?

Hi,
I am working on a Shoe project. Currently, to do the embroidery effect, I have to scan the materials and apply it into my model as the texture map.
I am wordering if we can make the embroidery effect in Keyshot without using any texture maps? see the reference photo below.

Thank you,
Denis

Those are quite tricky in my experience but it really depends on how close you will render things. If you need it for close-ups like the picture you need a high amount of detail.

Some time ago I made some uniforms for the crew of a rescue helicopter to be used in flightsimulator and ended up using something like this in Substance Painter: ArtStation - Fabric Embroidery Generator Series - 2 | Resources

That basically generates the right maps you can apply in KeyShot. You might can get far in KS itself as well but you need the logo UV unwrapped in a way the circular shapes are rectangles so when you apply a striped pattern for the threads it gets bend around the corner like in the reference picture.

If you use something like 8K textures you might get detail enough but maybe there are also plugins that can actually create the 3D geometry for embroidery. That was no option for flightsimulator since you just have the geometry as it is but might be an option as well.

To actually produce such embroidery special software is often used so maybe there are tools to translate it to actual geometry.

Hi Oscar,

Thanks for your advice. As the client’s requirement, i really need to have the embroidery in the super high quality and detailed. Also, thanks on the advice by using Substance Painter, unfortunately i have no skills on that software.

Denis

Hi Denis,

With some tutorials it don’t have to be really hard but especially if you’ve a client who wants a super high quality it’s good to give you an idea maybe on what is possible, also to communicate with the client.

In Blender you can create procedural geometry you could use like:
Embroidering on cloth in blender | Geometry nodes tutorial - YouTube
and Blender Geometry Nodes, Procedural Embroidery - YouTube

In Substance you would get this as max result I think:
ArtStation - My Embroidery Secret!!!

There’s quite a lot into embroidery and it’s more than some threads, it’s also overlapping threads etc. I came across this clip which is about embroidery software and it’s 20 minutes on the right way to have 3 letters programmed for a embroidery machine the right way: How to digitize for 3D Puff embroidery using PE Design 10 Software - YouTube

So I think it’s good if you be realistic about what is possible in 3D and what not. Or what you can do in a certain timeframe. If it has to look really real on closeups than I personally think the best solution is to put the embroidery there in POST using Photoshop etc.

If you have to deliver photorealistic product images I think it’s most practical to go for embedding the logo afterwards since that will give the best results and won’t take you ages as well. The best result is what counts most of the time so it shouldn’t been hard to convince the client as well.

But maybe others have a better idea, I really think it would be hard to create it totally photorealistic. Good luck!
